YouTube Studios Gets New Copyright Tools for Creators

YouTube creators just received a cool new feature for Christmas, allowing them to trim out copyrighted segments of their videos, rather than take down the whole thing, re-edit the video entirely, and upload it again.

Copyrighted content is something many content creators on YouTube are struggling with, especially when hit with a request to remove their videos due to some segment they included that they didn't have rights over, such as music videos, bits from various shows, or music, for instance.

The "Assisted Trim" isn't necessarily a surprise since they announced it a few weeks back, but the update is completely new. The move is supposed to help creators who receive copyright notices on their videos where only a portion of the video is affected, such as a song playing in the background that you may not have even noticed.

The best part about the new feature is that you don't even have to do the work yourself since it automatically identifies and highlights the areas of the video that are affected by the copyright claim so they can remove it immediately, resolving the claim in no time. This means that they won't have any monetization issues.

There are some other features that YouTube introduced, such as the possibility of viewing information about any active copyright strike and details on how to resolve it, which is pretty handy. You can also filter out your videos so you can only see those that have copyright claims on them.

"We're also providing more transparency about the content of the copyright takedown than ever before, now surfacing the specific description of the copyrighted work provided by the claimant in the takedown notice. In cases where that info is not readily available, there’s an option to contact our copyright team for a copy of the takedown notice," reads the blog post regarding another part of their update.

In the future, YouTube plans to do even more by allowing users to adjust the endpoints of what's selected by Content ID to make sure the viewing experience is still great. Unfortunately, there's no indication exactly when this update will take place, but it will likely not be long.
