Yellowjackets season 3 begins with a stark shift in the survivors' fates. After the disastrous events of season two, the teenage girls face their harshest challenges yet, while the adult survivors grapple with past trauma and present-day complications. In this article, we will discuss in the first two episodes of season 3.
Season three kicks off with the teenagers still trying to carve out a semblance of normalcy in the wilderness, despite the devastating fire that destroyed their cabin. Led by Natalie, the girls have managed to survive by building huts and raising animals, but tensions within the group are bubbling to the surface.
Shauna, still haunted by the loss of her baby and best friend, Jackie, rages in her journal about how the others have moved on while she remains stuck in grief. This sets the stage for a power struggle within the group, particularly between Shauna and Mari, whose rivalry intensifies.
In the present day, Shauna struggles to find peace after Natalie’s death. Attempting to bond with her daughter Callie, Shauna's life is anything but stable. Meanwhile, Misty, devastated by the unintentional death of Natalie at her own hands, becomes increasingly isolated. Walter, her well-meaning partner, tries to offer support, but Misty’s emotional walls prevent any real connection from forming.
One of the most intriguing plotlines of these episodes involves Shauna being stalked. A mysterious figure leaves an envelope for her containing a cassette tape, and the same figure is seen lurking outside a bathroom stall.
In a flashback to the wilderness, Shauna has a romantic encounter with Melissa, a survivor who previously had a minor role in the series. This unexpected twist suggests that Melissa may still be alive in the present and could be the one watching Shauna. If Melissa is indeed the stalker, her obsession with Shauna could have dangerous consequences for her and her family.
Teenage Shauna’s relationship with Melissa provides new depth to her character. No longer just a hardened survivor, Shauna shows vulnerability in her interactions with Melissa, raising questions about whether this romantic connection will empower Shauna or leave her more exposed to emotional pain.
The power dynamics in the group shift as Melissa becomes an unexpected ally to Shauna, possibly replacing Natalie as the group’s leader. This evolving bond could change the trajectory of the survivalist group’s future.
Meanwhile, Coach Ben, who has been surviving alone in the wilderness, uncovers a pit full of food supplies, raising more questions about who left them there. Ben, fearful of being killed and eaten by the group, decides to keep Mari captive in his cave to prevent her from revealing his location.
But Coach Ben’s strange behavior, including a conversation with an unknown figure in the cave, hints that his mental state may be unraveling. Is he still in control of his actions, or are hallucinations of his deceased boyfriend, Paul, driving him to darker choices?
Despite Walter's ongoing attempts to help Misty cope with the grief of losing Natalie, their relationship is falling apart. Misty’s self-destructive behavior pushes Walter away, and by the end of episode two, it appears they may be on the verge of breaking up. However, given the complexities of Misty’s character, this split may not be permanent, and their relationship may take unexpected turns as the season progresses.
The Yellowjackets season three premiere sets the stage for a season filled with tension, mystery, and the ever-present question of whether the survivors will ever truly escape the trauma of their past. From Shauna's potential stalker to Coach Ben's troubling descent into madness, the show promises even more twists and turns as the characters navigate their fractured lives. As the dark past continues to bleed into the present, it’s clear that the survivors' fates are far from sealed.
New episodes of Yellowjackets season 3 premiere every Friday on Paramount+ with Showtime. The third episode, “Them's the Brakes,” will air on Friday, Feb. 21, 2025.
