What’s Coming to Max in September 2024

Max has released an exciting lineup for September 2024. Some of the titles you can't miss out on include the new HBO Original The Penguin, the fourth and final season of the HBO Original drama series My Brilliant Friend; the HBO Original two-part documentary Wise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos; A24 films Civil War and I Saw The TV Glow; and the Studio Ghibli film The Boy and the Heron, directed and written by Hayao Miyazaki.

Featured Programming

Coming From America (Thursday, Sept. 5)

This is a six-episode Max Original unscripted series. Four African American families are taking a big risk by moving to Africa in search of a better life. They are lured by affordable housing and beautiful landscapes and hope to find love and good jobs. However, they will have to adapt to a new culture, and if they can make it through the first 60 days, their lives could change significantly.

The Boy and the Heron (Friday, Sept. 6)

This is a Studio Ghibli film directed and written by Hayao Miyazaki. After his mother dies in a hospital fire, young Mahito moves to his family's estate in the countryside. Mysterious events lead him to a secluded, ancient tower where a mischievous gray heron lives. When Mahito's new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower and enters a world shared by the living and the dead.

Wise Guy: David Chase And The Sopranos (Saturday, Sept. 7)

This is an HBO Original two-part documentary. Filmmaker Alex Gibney explores the life and career of David Chase, the creator and writer of the renowned TV show The Sopranos. This provides a unique insight into Chase's work on the iconic program.

My Brilliant Friend Season 4 (Monday, Sept. 9)

This is a 10-episode HBO Original drama series based on Elena Ferrante's popular novels. It follows the lives of Elena Greco and her close friend Raffaella "Lila" Cerullo from their childhood in 1950s Naples through more than 60 years. The fourth part of the series, called "Story of the Lost Child," explores their adult lives in Italy in the late 1980s, dealing with the challenges of motherhood, careers, betrayals, threats, and natural disasters.

Civil War (Friday, Sept. 13)

This is an A24 film about a future America in chaos. It follows a team of journalists embedded with the military. They are in a race against time to reach Washington, D.C. before rebel groups attack the White House.

The Penguin (Thursday, Sept. 19)

The Penguin is an eight-episode HBO Original Limited prequel series to Matt Reeves' The Batman. Set right after the 2022 film, this series follows Colin Farrell's character as he ascends to power in Gotham’s criminal underworld, becoming one of the most infamous villains in the Batman universe. The HBO Original series centers on Oz Cobb as he battles rival crime families in Gotham. 

I Saw the TV Glow (Friday, Sept. 20)

This is an A24 film. Owen is a teenager living in the suburbs. One day, a classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show. This show presents a supernatural world beneath their own, causing him to start questioning his reality.
