What was Stan Lee’s last few years like? Now, fans will get to know about it in the upcoming documentary Stan Lee: The Final Chapter. Fans of Marvel comics and the MCU are familiar with the comic book legend thanks to his multiple appearances at various comic cons.
Also, fans have always looked forward to his cameos in the Marvel films. But behind the scenes, things didn’t always seem to be hunky dory for the real-life Marvel hero. There were allegations of elder abuse amid a power struggle to control Lee’s estate.
This new documentary by Jon Bolerjack, who followed the icon wherever he went with his camera, aims to shed light on that. He has spent the past few years turning hundreds of hours of footage into this documentary.
In this article, we will reveal everything we know about the documentary Stan Lee: The Final Chapter including the just released trailer. Also, we will keep updating this space with more details as and when they get released.
At the time of writing, a release date hasn’t been revealed yet. However, Jon Bolerjack has begun a Kickstarter campaign to complete the work on the project.
Stan Lee, the Marvel excelsior, was a fixture in the Marvel cinematic juggernaut for decades. He met fans who clamored for his attention, attended movie premieres, and gave autographs at comic book conventions. However, in 2018, there were allegations of elder abuse amid a power struggle to gain access to his estate.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that in a document they had acquired, “three men with “bad intentions” — Jerardo “Jerry” Olivarez, Keya Morgan and J.C.’s attorney, Kirk Schenck — had improperly influenced his daughter, a woman with “very few adult friends.” The document claims the trio has “insinuated themselves into relationships with J.C. for an ulterior motive and purpose”: to take advantage of Lee and “gain control over my assets, property and money.””
However, Jon Bolerjack alleges that things were worse even before and that Stan Lee was facing financial difficulties when he died at the age of 95 in November 2018. Bolerjack, a comic book fan who had also studied documentaries at film school, met Lee through a mutual friend so that he could pitch him a reality show.
Lee agreed and so he became a part of his entourage. Through his camera he captured Lee’s demanding schedule even at his old age. He traveled to conventions and spent hours signing autographs. Bolerjack states (via THR) that he tried to help however he could by attempting to reduce the workload and advocating for more breaks.
But in doing so he broke the rule of growing close to his subject. He said, “I grew to look at him as a friend, as family, and I really wanted to be there to advocate for him… I was doing the best I could.”
While the reality show didn’t materialize and was instead turned into doc, Bolerjack states that Lee was informed of it and gave his blessings. He said, “I spoke to him about this at length, even toward the very end of his life. A lot of things have happened to him, but I didn’t get the real sense that he felt shame about it.”
Instead, Bolerjack says, “I think he wanted it out there to be that sort of warning.” He revealed that his camera has captured poor behavior among Lee’s inner circle.
The trailer released till now doesn’t take any names, but it does show Max Anderson, the former road manager of Stan Lee.
Jon Bolerjack has released a trailer of the documentary, and it begins with him saying, “For the last four years of Stan Lee’s life I was his assistant, his confidant, but most importantly, his friend.” He says that he traveled the world with him and his words are backed up by behind-the-scenes, almost never-before-seen images from Marvel film premieres, conventions, and more.
Bolerjack also states in the trailer that Stan Lee endured “mistreatment, manipulation, and betrayal” in his last years. Check out the trailer below:
