What is the plot of Dying for Sex?

Dying for Sex is inspired by Molly Kochan’s story, which was originally shared on the Wondery podcast she created with Nikki Boyer, her best friend. The official logline of the show reads:

After Molly (Michelle Williams) receives a diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, she decides to leave her husband, Steve (Jay Duplass), and begins to explore the full breadth and complexity of her sexual desires for the first time in her life. Gird yourself, Molly has a lot to accomplish in the little time she has left.”

It further says:

There’s no time for pearl clutching or passing judgement, Molly has no interest in what you think about her proverbial bucket list (btw, this phrase will always provoke an eye roll). She gains the courage to embark on this adventure from her ride or die Nikki (Jenny Slate), a woman whose love and devotion will compel you to pick up the phone and call that friend already!

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Michelle Williams said about her character:

"This is a person who wants to experience every sensation, every available pleasure, the most out of everything as a kind of counterbalance to her medical life, where things are being done to her and it’s procedural and it’s uncomfortable. Like when she had a cane and they said, “Is that part of your kink?”—she turned these negatives into positives."

The actress also talked about the original Molly and further explained:

"The real Molly continued to find ways to explore her sexuality, to feel good about her body even when she was right toward the end of her life. She loved to get beautiful lingerie and would take these really gorgeous pictures of herself, but they would be creatively disguising chemo scars or where her chemo port was. She found ways to continue to love herself."

She also said that Molly wanted to heal something in her- "I would say Molly’s radical acceptance of what a body wants. She wanted to heal something even though her end was in sight—she didn’t want to go out broken."
