What we know About the Mortal Kombat 2 film

Mortal Kombat 2 is all set to be released this year.The anticipation is high especially because the first film teased the arrival of multiple new characters to add to the already stacked cast. Fans expect the action choreography, visual effects, and more to be even better than the first one. 

While a trailer hasn’t been released yet, key artwork of new characters are getting released. The movie promises to give fans of the original fighting game the gore, bloodshed, and violence, all packaged within an engaging storyline.

Release date and Where to Watch

Mortal Kombat 2 will be released in theaters on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2025. The film has received an R rating from the MPA for strong bloody violence, gore, and language.

What is Mortal Kombat 2 About?

An official plot synopsis for the film hasn’t been announced yet. But it’s rumored to be taking place during the tournament. In an interview with Collider, Greg Russo, who co-wrote Mortal Kombat 1 revealed that he sees the reboot as a trilogy. 

So, the first film is set before the tournament, the second film takes place during the tournament, and the third one is set post-tournament. Also, in the ending scene of Mortal Kombat 1 we saw that Outworld warlock Shang Tsung warned Thunder God Raiden that he will be back with an army the next time. 

So, Raiden sends out the champions to recruit more people like them. As such, the sequel will definitely be bigger. Also, Shang Tsung said that death is just a portal. This means that he can bring his fighters back from the dead. Also, since Raiden brought back Scorpion, both teams are willing to bend the rules. 

There’s also buzz (thanks to this photo from Garner) that a significant part of the sequel will take place in the Netherrealm, which is the franchise’s equivalent of hell. Also, since Scorpion is now back from the Netherrealm, he could join forces with Cole to defeat the warriors of Outworld. 

In the end, Cole sets out to find Johnny Cage. We now have confirmation that Cage is in fact in the sequel because a new promotional artwork has been released of him.

Filming and Production Details 

Mortal Kombat 2 began filming on June 22, 2023, at the Village Roadshow Studios in Queensland, Australia. Exteriors were filmed across the Gold Coast locations, due to the diverse landscapes there. Filming officially wrapped in late January 2024.

Mortal Kombat 2 is directed by Simon McQuoid, who also helmed the first film. Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight, The Umbrella Academy) is in charge of the screenplay. Stephen F. Windon is the director of photography. Richard Brener, Michael Clear, Lawrence Kasanoff, and more are the executive producers. 

Toby Emmerich, Todd Garner, Simon McQuoid, etc., are the producers. Atomic Monster, Broken Road Productions, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros. are the production companies involved. DNEG is assisting with the visual effects.
