Spoiler Alert

This article contains spoilers for Abbott Elementary season 4, episode 9, titled Volunteers.

Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s much-awaited crossover has finally happened! And it didn't disappoint at all. Episode 9 of Season 4 started off with Ava announcing that some volunteers were coming in to help at the school.

These volunteers were Dennis, Dee, Mac, Charlie, and Frank. While the bunch were on their best behavior in the beginning, soon things went haywire. In this article, we will recap what happened in the Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover.

Recap: Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Crossover

In the crossover episode, Dennis didn’t like that there was a documentary crew so he left as he didn’t want to be filmed. The first person who recognized the criminal friends was Melissa and while initially they didn’t know who she was, the gang soon included her and they bonded fast.

However, later on in the episode, Melissa realized that she really knew them as the proprietors of Paddy’s Pub. But by that time, the team had embedded themselves into the school group in various ways. For one, Janine and Dee quickly became friends because they attended the same college.

So, they were able to bond over shared memories and worked together to ensure that Janine’s classroom ran smoothly. But why were the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia crew even volunteering? It was because they were actually doing community service for crimes.

As expected, multiple faculty members like Barbara and Jacob were not enthused by this and even wanted them to leave. However, Janine vouched for them because of Dee. But, her trust backfired because when Dee saw Gregory, Janine’s partner, she fell head over heels for him and wanted him for herself.

This obviously made Janine panic even though Gregory made it clear that he only had eyes for her. That’s not all. Frank and Mr. Johnson also argued over how to get rid of Gregory’s garden raccoons after they took over the garden. The latter suggested using garlic and chill powder around the beds but Frank wanted them to place pelts soaked with the urine of Alpha predators.

Thankfully, the raccoon issue was seemingly resolved even though they didn’t come to an agreement. On the other hand, Max tried to impress Ava by doing everything from picking up her fresh coffee to getting her car detailed, all so that she would sign their release forms early.

However, this backfired as the principal instead said that she was considering framing them all for another crime. Max saw no way out till he saw Charlie successfully able to read a book on birds thanks to Melissa and Barbara who taught him. This gave Max an idea.

Ava wanted to get more money from the golf course developers so she and Max got the idea of faking the presence of an endangered bird species on the proposed building site of the gold course. Ava then called the developers and asked them to choose between paying up or getting a visit from the environmental regulators.

They agreed to Ava’s request for a new scoreboard and Ava signed the gang’s release forms. This was how the Abbott Elementary crew got their scoreboard and the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia gang got their release forms signed early.
