From Here/From There (De Aquí/De Allá) in the PBS series Voces tells the remarkable story of Luis Cortes Romero, the first undocumented attorney to argue a case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Luis, a DACA recipient (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and immigration attorney, grew up in Redwood City, California.

He discovered his undocumented status when he couldn't join a class trip to Europe. His father's deportation by ICE caused his family to split apart, but his mother's support and a Chicano Studies program helped him turn his life around.

When DACA was introduced in 2012, Luis's life changed dramatically. He became an immigration lawyer, helping others like him. In 2017, he took on the case of Daniel Ramirez, a DACA recipient wrongfully arrested, which hinted at DACA's fragility under the Trump administration. When DACA was rescinded, Luis joined a powerhouse legal team to defend the program, eventually arguing their case before the Supreme Court in 2019.

Despite initial skepticism from pundits, the team won in June 2020, reversing the administration's decision to end DACA. However, the future of DACA remains uncertain, leaving many young immigrants in limbo. This film highlights Luis's journey and the ongoing fight for the rights of DACA recipients.
