With over 80% young voters in the US not voting in the previous mid-term elections, Snapchat is trying to encourage more citizens to go out and vote. The popular social media app is offering all US citizens who are over the age of 18 a chance to register right on their mobile devices.
A new voting registration button is available on Snapchat for US users. Clicking on it will redirect them to a Snapchat-branded Turbovote website that allows users to register for the upcoming mid-term elections. The website also showcases relevant stories about the upcoming elections.
A Team Snapchat message will also be sent to all users who are of voting age to notify them about the in-app registration service. The app will also be promoting National Voter Registration Day.
There are over 100 million Snapchat users in North America, and if the campaign is successful, the app can potentially encourage a sizeable number of people to go out and vote more frequently. TurboVote also partnered with Instagram recently and will allow users to share an “I Voted” story sticker on the election day.
It is unknown if the initiative will help improve the number of voters as research on the 2014 mid-term elections suggests that most eligible voters were simply too busy in 2014 due to the elections being on a working day. However, 24% respondents of the research study stated that there were difficulties in registering for the elections and they missed the deadline. Snapchat’s initiative can help on that front by helping users register right on their smartphones. The new registration feature is available on both Android and iOS variants of the app and your country needs to be set to the USA to access the registration feature.
