Unforgotten Series 6 Ending Explained: Who Killed and Dismembered Gerry Cooper?

Unforgotten series 6 episode 1 does a great job of setting up the main mystery of the season. After all, who killed Gerry Cooper and why was he dismembered and then thrown in the Whitney Marsh? In this article, we will reveal the answers to those questions. 

Who Killed Gerry Cooper?

Ultimately, it was Taylor Cooper, Gerry Cooper’s daughter, who accidentally killed him. Initially, when Jess and Sunny questioned Juliet Cooper, the wife of Gerry Cooper, she revealed that she was the one who had accidentally stabbed her husband's thigh. 

She had then locked herself in the bathroom and in the morning found that Gerry had bled out. Then she cleaned out the blood, hid Gerry’s body in his office, sent Taylor to school, and arranged a playdate for her. After this, Juliet bought carving knives, tape, and sacks. 

Then, she worked on dismembering her husband’s body and wrapped each part in bin liners before hiding them in his office. After Taylor returned from her playdate, Juliet gave her an herbal sleeping pill with hot chocolate. She then got to work on disposing of the body parts. 

First, she changed the number plate on her car with the gaffer tape. After that, she went to the marshes to get rid of Gerry’s body. However, Jessica quickly catches the lie in her timeline. According to Juliet, she was cooking dinner when Gerry got back around 11 pm. 

However, Gerry’s phone records showed that he had ordered food at their flat at 7 pm and not 11 pm. So, what was the truth? In a talk with Taylor, it’s revealed that Gerry was often violent to Juliet, and she would hear it as well. On the fateful night, she had heard the commotion and come downstairs only to find that her mother was on the floor with Gerry kicking her. 

Unable to bear this, she picked up a small knife and jammed it into his leg. Juliet then took Taylor away to get her a bath. After that, she read a book to make her fall asleep. The next morning, Juliet told her that Gerry had left for work early. 

When Taylor returned home after her playdate, her mother informed her that Gerry was in his office and didn’t want to be disturbed. So, for Taylor, her father has gone missing the next day. As such, it was Taylor who had accidentally killed her father and to save her daughter from prison, Juliet had framed herself. 

Who was Arrested for Gerry Cooper's Death?

Neither Taylor nor Juliet was arrested for Gerry Cooper’s death. Sunny and Jessica know that there are two ways to get justice- one is to let Juliet take the blame. She could plead self-defense and get out of jail within a couple of years. 

However, doing that wouldn’t be right since Juliet hadn’t murdered Gerry. The second option was to tell CPS about what Taylor did. They were likely to decide that it wasn’t in the public interest to charge her for murder. Juliet could be charged with preventing justice from taking its course as well as unlawful disposal, but CPS likely wouldn’t prosecute.  

They take the second route and as predicted CPS doesn’t charge Taylor and even lets Juliet go. This means that no one was arrested for Gerry’s death. 

What Happens to Jessica and Sunny at the end of Unforgotten Series 6?

At the end of the final episode of Unforgotten series 6, Jessica drives home and while parking her car, she finds that her estranged husband Steve is on a date with another woman. This comes just days after Jess had said that she wanted a divorce while he wanted to work on their relationship. 

Jessica chooses to drive away. As for Sunny, he and Leanne talk about why she was ignoring him after their date ended in a kiss. Leanne tells him that 24 years ago, she had left an unhappy relationship without any notice. Not just that, she had also left their daughter behind. 

Before Sunny can say anything, Leanne leaves. Later, he called her up and requested a meeting to talk more. So maybe, both can forge a relationship or maybe a friendship out of it.
