Tyler Perry’s latest thriller, Duplicity, delivers a suspenseful story filled with shocking betrayals, hidden agendas, and an intense social commentary on justice. The film follows Marley (Kat Graham), a determined lawyer, as she investigates the death of her best friend’s husband, Rodney (Joshua Adeyeye). But as she digs deeper, she uncovers a web of lies that shakes her world.
Rodney, a struggling gym owner and fitness trainer, is shot and killed while on his morning run after an anonymous caller falsely reports him as a threat. Two officers, Kevin and rookie cop Caleb, respond to the call. As Rodney reaches into his pocket—likely to turn off his music—Kevin yells “Gun!” and Caleb instinctively fires, killing Rodney on the spot. While Kevin insists it was an unfortunate mistake, Caleb is visibly shaken, hinting at a deeper truth.
As Marley and Fela (Meagan Tandy), Rodney’s wife, push for justice, disturbing revelations emerge. Journalists investigating the case discover Rodney was unfaithful and drowning in financial troubles.
Meanwhile, Caleb’s past resurfaces—he had a history of racially charged altercations in the military, making his involvement in Rodney’s death even more suspicious. Public protests erupt, demanding justice for Rodney, as Marley fights to hold the responsible parties accountable.
Months later, while still investigating, Marley is kidnapped by Caleb, his wife, and Rodney’s secret girlfriend. They plead for her to consider Kevin as the real culprit. It turns out Kevin had been stalking Rodney’s girlfriend after their breakup. Consumed by jealousy, he orchestrated Rodney’s murder and framed Caleb to cover his tracks.
But Marley soon realizes there’s more to the story—her own boyfriend, Tony (Tyler Lepley), has been keeping secrets. When she confronts him at Kevin’s newly purchased home, the truth unravels: Tony, Kevin, and even Fela were in on the scheme. They had manipulated Rodney’s death to secure a massive settlement, planning to split the money.
Marley is drugged and taken onto a boat, where the trio plans to kill her. Just as they’re figuring out how to dispose of her, a patrolling officer approaches. Kevin panics and shoots the officer, whose body falls into the lake. As the villains debate their next move, Marley regains consciousness. In a final act of survival, she uses a flare gun to take down Kevin, Tony, and Fela, ensuring their plans are destroyed.
Surviving the ordeal, Marley appears on a TV interview, delivering a powerful statement on the dangers of corruption, deception, and systemic injustices. She reminds the world that cases like Rodney’s shouldn’t be politicized—justice should stand on its own. While she emerges victorious, the events of Duplicity leave her trust shattered, proving that even those closest to us can be the biggest deceivers.
