Twitter launched its new service called 'Twitter Lite' in India and will soon be launched in Indonesia and other developing regions. Facebook also has an alternative called Facebook Lite, and Microsoft has launched the Skype Lite app too.
The new light version can be accessed from a browser in contrast to the heavier app version available on iOS and Android that need to be downloaded from either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Twitter says, it worked with Google on "progressive web app" to create the lighter web version to this service and it will utilize as minimal mobile data as possible.
Android devices running Google Chrome users will also be able to receive push notifications from Twitter Lite's mobile website directly onto their smartphones or tablets.
Twitter says that the lite version will load to the point of interactivity in under 5 seconds on most 3G devices, and it claims this feature can cut down the data usage up to 70%.
The company Twitter has also a partnership with Vodafone in India to popularize the service through its network of around 200 million subscribers.
