G20 is set to stream globally on Thursday, April 10, 2025, in over 240 countries and territories on Prime Video. The film carries an R rating for intense violence throughout.
At the heart of G20 is U.S. President Danielle Sutton, played by Academy Award winner Viola Davis. She finds herself thrust into a life-or-death situation when the G20 Summit in Cape Town is overtaken by terrorists.
Once a decorated Iraq war veteran, Sutton arrives at the summit with her family, only for diplomatic formalities to be shattered as armed mercenaries storm the venue, taking most of the world leaders hostage. Sutton narrowly escapes and must now rely on her battlefield instincts to protect her loved ones, defend her country, and stop a global catastrophe.
“This is Viola Davis as you’ve never seen her — heroically kicking tons of ass in a global thrill ride,” (via THR) says director Patricia Riggen. “With G20, I wanted to make the kind of classic, edge-of-your-seat action film that I’ve always been such a fan of, but one that draws on the high stakes of our modern and technologically advanced world we live in. I hope to give audiences an experience that will captivate them from start to finish.”
The attack is led by Rutledge, played by The Boys’ Antony Starr — a fellow Iraq war vet left broken by his experiences. Now a radicalized mercenary, he’s launched a violent plan to “reset” the global financial system. As Sutton becomes the terrorists’ number one target, she must outsmart Rutledge’s forces in a mission that pushes her to the limits.
“G20 is a high-stakes action film with a lot of heart,” said producers Viola Davis and Julius Tennon. Andrew Lazar added, “It boasts a fantastic ensemble cast, and is rooted in the fundamental drive we all have to protect the people and places that matter most to us.”
Viola Davis shared insight into her character: “President Sutton is a woman with lofty goals and dreams and takes her role as US President very seriously but is constantly trying to prove she deserves it. At the G20 Summit, she’s forced to prove she’s worthy in the worst possible situation.” (via whattowatch)
Antony Starr opens up about his character Rutledge, “Since returning from the war, Rutledge has isolated himself from friends and family,” he says. “The feeling that he has been left behind has radicalised him. His mission is twofold. He believes he is fighting back on behalf of people who feel left behind, but there’s also a startling personal motive.” (via whattowatch)
