The Legend of Ochi is about the unlikely bond a young girl, Yuri, forges with a creature called Ochi. She befriends this injured animal that she was taught to hate, and then begins a journey to reunite it with its parents. But that’s easier said than done when the path is full of life-threatening things and her own father stands in her way.Â
So, what happens in the end? Does the Ochi reunite with its parents and does Yuri finally find her mother who abandoned her? In this article, we will explore the ending of the film and figure out the answers to these questions and more.Â
Yes, Yuri and her parents help get the baby Ochi back to its people and family. But the journey to that was difficult, as Yuri put her life on the line to make this difficult task a reality. She was, in fact, the only human who showed it compassion and saw it as her equal.Â
Along the way, her mother’s knowledge about these creatures helped her understand them, while her father’s help (even though he hated them) allowed her to reach the island in the middle of the cave. So, reuniting the animals also allowed her to reunite her own fractured family.Â
One of the biggest questions this film poses is about Yuri’s mother and the reason behind her abandoning her daughter. The film doesn’t clearly answer what caused Dasha to leave. However, it does provide enough information to help us speculate what might have happened. For one, Dasha is curious about the Ochi and has researched them enough to know how to communicate with them.Â
However, Maxim, Yuri’s father, hates these creatures, and the families even give him their little boys to train as soldiers so that they can defend the town against the Ochi. However, rather than just defending, Maxim and his gang actively hunt the Ochi.Â
As such, there is a clear dichotomy between these two people, which most likely would have contributed to their separation. Also, Dasha mentions an incident where Maxim cut off her arm after an Ochi bit her. He believed that there was no other way to save her, while Dasha was probably open to less extreme ideas. This incident was probably the one that made Yuri’s mother leave.Â
Over the course of the film, Yuri figures out that she can speak to the baby Ochi she has been helping. While it first seems like a side-effect of the Ochi’s bite but it’s later revealed that Yuri learned how to talk to these creatures when she was little.Â
Yuri’s mother, Dasha, taught her how to speak to these animals when she was just a kid. While her father later kept her from this knowledge and the Ochi, the adventure with the baby creature brought this skill to the surface again.Â
The Legend of Ochi is now in theaters.Â
