What is the plot of The Killer's Game?

In The Killer's Game, Joe Flood, a veteran assassin’s life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Maize, a dancer he saves during an assassination. Their bond deepens, but Joe’s hidden past as an assassin complicates matters. After receiving a devastating and life-threatening diagnosis, Joe hires Marianna Antoinette to handle the hit, and the contract is set in motion. 

But as the assassins close in on him, Joe struggles to stop the chain of events, only to discover that his illness is a false diagnosis. With the contract still in place, Joe goes on a violent rampage to fend off the assassins, leading him to confront his ex-girlfriend, Marianna, and his own past. 

As he faces multiple assassins, including a hit squad led by Max, Joe’s world spirals into a final showdown. In a desperate bid to save Maize, Joe marries her in a church, but their wedding is interrupted by a deadly confrontation. With Maize’s life at risk, Joe must choose between his past as a killer and his future with her.

The first trailer for The Killer’s Game opens with Joseph Flood, telling his date that he works as a "retirement planner." However, it quickly becomes clear that Flood is far from ordinary—he’s a deadly assassin. 

The trailer reveals that Flood has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, leading him to make a drastic decision: he puts out a contract on his own life. As a result, a wave of assassins—including his ex-girlfriend, played by Sofia Boutella—are sent to eliminate him.

The chaos escalates when Flood learns that he’s not actually dying and desperately tries to revoke the contract. But his efforts are complicated by the fact that his contractor holds a personal grudge, having lost her father to Flood’s deadly skills.

Filming & Production

Filming for The Killer's Game began in July 2023 in Budapest, with the film receiving an interim agreement waiver to continue production during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Final writing credits were submitted in November 2023.

The Killer's Game is directed by J.J. Perry, known for his work in the action genre, including stunt performances in John Wick and The Fast and the Furious franchises. The film is based on Jay Bonansinga's novel, with the screenplay written by James Coyne and Rand Ravich.

The film features music by Roque Baños and the cinematography is done by Flavio Martínez Labiano. It also boasts of production design by Matt Gant and art direction by Dániel Börcsök and Zoltán Sárdi. Costume design is handled by David Wolfe.
