When his football career ended, Medi Abalimba turned to fraud, creating fake identities to scam numerous victims. The ITVX documentary The Footballer Fraudster delves into his crimes, interviewing his high-profile victims and featuring insights from forensic psychologist Dr. Donna Youngs, who explores the psychological factors driving Medi’s actions and how he deceived so many people.
Abalimba's current whereabouts are unknown. He was jailed for four years and two months in 2021 for fraud and was reportedly released earlier this year but hasn't been seen since. Abalimba, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, moved to London with his family to escape rising tensions. Dr. Youngs suggests his disrupted childhood might have contributed to his criminal behavior.
By 2013, Abalimba had already received a suspended sentence and community service for fraud. In 2014, he admitted to 12 charges of fraud with 19 additional offenses, leading to a four-year prison sentence. He returned to prison in 2021 for more fraud-related crimes, and although released earlier this year, The Athletic reports he disputes some of the documentary’s allegations, blaming the end of his career for his actions.
Abalimba, who once played for clubs like Derby County and Oldham Athletic, pretended to be Chelsea footballer Gael Kakuta to gain access to luxury venues, racking up unpaid tabs and using stolen credit cards. His deception was uncovered in Manchester when he attempted to collect thousands of pounds worth of clothes from Selfridges without proper payment. In October 2014, he received a four-year sentence after admitting to fraudulently obtaining £163,000.
Even in prison, Abalimba continued his deceit, forming a relationship with a nurse who smuggled a phone for him, leading to her imprisonment. Among his notable victims were former Love Island star Georgia Steel and Thierry Henry's ex-wife Claire Henry.Â
After his 2018 release, he briefly dated Georgia, who discovered £32,000 missing from her account after he left. Arrested in September 2019 for fraud and breaching bail conditions, he resumed his relationship with Claire Henry, stealing £50,000 from her before being jailed again in March 2021.
