What is the plot of The Eternaut?

One summer night in Buenos Aires, an eerie snowfall begins — beautiful at first glance, but lethally deceptive. The snow is radioactive, wiping out most of the population instantly and leaving only a handful of survivors. Juan Salvo and his friends band together in a desperate struggle to stay alive, soon realizing that the snowstorm is just the beginning of an alien invasion. The only hope for survival is unity, as no one can endure this catastrophe alone.

Is The Eternaut Based on a book?

Yes, The Eternaut is based on the Eisner Award–winning graphic novel El Eternauta, written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and illustrated by Francisco Solano López. Originally published in installments between 1957 and 1959, it was later compiled into a single volume in 2015.

Speaking to Netflix, director Bruno Stagnaro shared his personal connection to the novel, saying, “[The Eternaut] was one of the first things I read in full in my life, when I was 10 years old.” He added, “My approach to the adaptation will be to be faithful to that child reader who came across the story for the first time, to try to reconstruct the genuine emotion of living an adventure on the corner of your neighborhood, and the construction of that great Argentine hero that is Juan Salvo.”

Why is The Eternaut so Popular?

The Eternaut holds a special place in Argentine culture largely because of its deeply familiar setting and timeless themes. Oesterheld, a key figure in the golden age of Argentine comics alongside the Venice Group, crafted a story that unfolded across real Buenos Aires landmarks—like River Plate's stadium—reimagined in haunting post-apocalyptic detail by artist Francisco Solano López.

Beyond its local resonance, The Eternaut gained international acclaim for its universal message. It’s a survival tale in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe, but with a philosophical emphasis on collaboration over individualism, touching on broader themes of social struggle.

That message became even more powerful considering Oesterheld’s own tragic fate—he and his four daughters were kidnapped and murdered during Argentina’s military dictatorship in the late 1970s, their bodies never found.

Today, The Eternaut remains a cultural icon. Former president Néstor Kirchner was frequently depicted as The Eternaut in street art and graffiti, proving that Oesterheld’s legacy continues to inspire generations.

When & Where did The Eternaut film?

The series is set and filmed in Buenos Aires, with director Bruno Stagnaro describing the city as “a living presence, almost like another character.” (via Tudum) Filming began in May 2023, with Gastón Girod serving as director of photography.

In June 2023, scenes were shot at Avenida General Paz, bordering Vicente López Partido and the Buenos Aires neighborhoods of Núñez and Saavedra, featuring sets with snow, armed soldiers, and vintage cars. 

More filming took place in Saavedra in October 2023. Although production was briefly delayed in November 2023 due to Ricardo Darín’s busy schedule, shooting continued with the rest of the cast, and Carla Peterson had already completed her scenes. Filming officially wrapped in December 2023.

The production utilized over 35 locations, and more than 25 stages were created through virtual production. Vast sections of Buenos Aires were digitally scanned and integrated into an Unreal Engine virtual reality system, allowing exterior scenes from multiple environments to be shot consecutively. The COVID-19 pandemic made it possible to capture the comic’s iconic “desolate city” atmosphere (via Pagina12).

The Eternaut (Spanish: El Eternauta) is an upcoming Argentine television series created and directed by Bruno Stagnaro, with the script co-written by Stagnaro and writer-actor Ariel Staltari. Based on the iconic comic by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López, the series is produced by K&S Films. Federico Jusid composed the score for the series. 

Netflix first announced The Eternaut in May 2023, describing it as an audiovisual adaptation of the iconic graphic novel, just as production kicked off. Reflecting on the project, Stagnaro shared, “For me, El Eternauta represents my father bringing me the comics every week.
