Release date & Where to Watch

The final chapter of the original Conjuring series is set to be a late-summer blockbuster. It is scheduled to premiere in theaters on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2025.

Plot

Details about the storyline for The Conjuring: Last Rites remain scarce, but it's expected that the fourth film will pick up sometime during the 1980s, following the events of The Devil Made Me Do It, which ended in 1981. The Warrens had notable cases in that decade, such as the Snedeker house, which inspired The Haunting in Connecticut, and the Smurl haunting, both involving demonic activity in family homes. Although these cases are strong contenders for the plot, the producers may opt to avoid the more famous ones to keep the series fresh.

As the final installment in the main series, The Conjuring 4 is expected to deliver a climactic story, potentially tying in religious elements, given its title, Last Rites. In Catholicism, Last Rites refers to the prayers given to someone nearing death, hinting at a heavy religious theme. While director James Wan has hinted that this might be the last film, he’s also been secretive about the plot, though he once mentioned an interest in placing the Warrens in a setting inspired by The Hound of the Baskervilles or pitting them against a lycanthrope. However, it's likely that the antagonists will remain demonic.

Another potential plot could involve the legend of the White Lady at Union Cemetery in Easton, Connecticut, a phenomenon the Warrens documented. The spirit, said to appear in a white nightgown or wedding dress, haunts the cemetery and has reportedly caused drivers to swerve to avoid her. This case could offer a fresh and chilling direction for the film.

Ultimately, The Conjuring 4 will focus on wrapping up Ed and Lorraine Warren's story, possibly by revisiting one of their final, most intense cases, making it a fitting conclusion to the main series.

Is Conjuring 4 Based on a True Story?

The fourth installment will further explore the eerie world of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. This film will dive deep into their chilling encounters with demons, witches, and malevolent spirits, all inspired by real-life exorcism cases that the Warrens famously investigated.

What's next after The Conjuring: Last Rites?

While The Conjuring: Last Rites is set to conclude Ed and Lorraine Warren's story in the mainline series, the Conjuring universe is far from over. A Conjuring TV series is in development for Warner Bros’ streaming service, Max, aiming to continue the Warrens’ legacy. Additionally, there’s speculation about future spin-offs like The Nun 3 and Annabelle 4. Just as other iconic horror franchises like Friday the 13th and Saw have found ways to return, the supernatural allure of the Conjuring universe suggests that more chilling adventures could be on the horizon.

Where is Conjuring 4: The Last Rites Filmed?

The fourth and final installment of the series will be filmed in the picturesque British countryside. Production has begun in Atlanta.
