T-Mobile is rolling out support for the Google-powered RCS Universal profile which can turn standard texting apps into modern messaging apps. The RCS Universal profile includes typing indicators, read receipts and other features that you would expect to find on internet-based messaging apps.
T-Mobile is pushing out the new standard for the Samsung S7, and S7 Edge devices and more devices will follow suit in the future. It is a great step by T-Mobile to improve the messaging experience for Android users. While T-Mobile has always supported the RCS messaging standard which offered basic functionality, the ‘Universal’ RCS Standard was not implemented until now.
GSMA Universal Profile 1.0 sw updates have started rolling out, extending @TMobile’s long history of RCS leadership, bringing up to 100MB transfers and 100-person group chats natively. Starting w/ Galaxy S7/S7 Edge devices & more to come over time!

While it has not been revealed how many of the existing Android devices will be updated to support the RCS platform by T-Mobile, it is likely that all new Android devices under T-Mobile will support the platform out of the box. While T-Mobile has decided to implement the new messaging feature via RCS, Verizon and AT&T have not revealed any release date for RCS. However, both carriers have mentioned that they want to adopt Universal RCS 1.0 and we will have to wait and watch until more devices are offered support for the platform.
Samsung S7 and S7 Edge users do not need to do anything to receive the update. Users will automatically be able to see the new features in the native messaging apps once it is rolled out. Google is working with carriers to push out the features to as many devices as possible in the future. We should have more devices getting the update and other carriers across the world supporting RCS in the near future.
