Indian anime fans are in luck! According to an announcement from PVR pictures, the Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night movie is all set to open in Indian theatres. At the T-Joy PRINCE Shinagawa theater in Tokyo, the film saw an advanced IMAX screening on September 15, 2021. On October 30, 2021, the film opened nationwide in Japan in all theatres, topping the box office in its first week. The film earned an accumulative total of 1,326,146,793 yen (about US$11.67 million) as of December 2021.
The anime film is based on Reki Kawahara's light novel series, Sword Art Online: Progressive. The novel series launched in 2012 as an altered account of Kawahara's original Sword Art Online novels. The story focuses on Kirito's journey through the floating Aincrad castle, floor-by-floor. The Sword Art Online: Progressive novel series and two manga adaptations are being published by Yen Press in English.
Based on the progressive novel series, a second film, titled 'Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of a Dark Dusk,' is scheduled to be released in 2022.
PVR Pictures has announced that the Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night movie will open in Indian theaters on February 25. Ayako Kohno directed the film at A-1 pictures. Kohno has previously worked on films like Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic, High School Fleet, The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: Prisoners of the Sky, etc. In addition, the characters have been designed by Kento Toya, who has also been involved in designing Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld, The Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments, etc.
Yasuyuki Kai served as an action director for the film while Yuki Kajiura returned to compose the music. In addition, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Kirito and Haruka Tomatsu as Asuna also returned as voice actors.
Ticket booking platform BookMyShow describes the film as:
"High school student Asuna struggles to survive with a young swordsman after its revealed that she is trapped inside the game of Sword Art Online, where if your HP drops to zero, your brain will be destroyed in real life."
