James Gunn’s Superman teaser trailer gave glimpses of multiple DC heroes and one of them is Guy Gardner. The Green Lantern hero will be played by Nathan Fillion (The Rookie). This appearance comes before the upcoming Lantern series which will also feature Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan.

But what is Guy Gardner doing in the Superman film? In this article we will discuss the character and his possible role in the 2025 movie.

Who is Green Lantern Guy Gardner?

In the Superman teaser trailer we see a Green Lantern with a horrendous bowl haircut using his powers at Stagg Enerprises- that is Guy Gardner, played by Nathan Fillion, who has previously worked with director James Gunn on one DC and one MCU project- The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 respectively.

Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern debuted in the pages of DC comics in 1968. He was created by John Broome and Gil Kane in Green Lantern (vol. 2) in issue 59. However, the character was massively changed in the 1980s by Joe Staton and Steve Englehart.

In the comics, Guy’s father Roland Gardner is an abusive alcoholic who beats up Guy everyday and instead lavishes attention on his older brother, Mace. Guy finds solace in the General Glory comic books, and even models his bowl cut haircut on Ernie, Glory’s sidekick.

In an interview with Collider, Nathan Fillion talked about Guy Gardner’s flawed nature. He said, “The reality is that people have flaws. We all have quirks. We all have vulnerabilities… Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care. That’s one of his flaws. I think there’s a real freedom in playing that. So, for a guy who likes to play flaws and flawed people, Guy Gardner is a gold mine."

What is Guy Doing in the Superman film?

Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, along with Mr. Terrific, and Hawkgirl, all are wearing suits which seem to have the LordTech logo on them. This means that they are probably working for Maxwell Lord, a supervillain businessman who owns Lordtech. In the DCU, Sean Gunn will be playing him.

This probably means that they are corporate superheroes who don’t shy away from hurting people if needed, whereas Superman will probably be a contrast where he will have a no-kill rule. It will be interesting to see how their dynamic gets explored.

Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
