Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is the latest live-action series to join the Disney+ lineup, alongside Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Mandalorian. Similar to how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded into the Disney+ series, the Star Wars universe is embracing this new format.

Skeleton Crew promises to deliver a fresh story set apart from the Skywalker Saga. We have news of the premiere date, where you can watch it, and we will also share a glimpse of the young cast of characters. We will update this article with the new information whenever it becomes available, so keep reading!

Release Date & Where to Watch

The Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will release on Disney Plus on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2024. The show’s genres are action, adventure, and sci-fi.

Plot

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, part of the Star Wars franchise, is set in the same timeframe as The Mandalorian and its spin-off, post- Return of the Jedi (1983).

The series follows four children who find themselves lost in a dangerous galaxy after making a mysterious discovery on their home planet. On their journey home, they encounter both allies and enemies. Jude Law plays Jod Na Nawood, and Nick Frost voices a cranky droid named SM33.

Inspired by 1980s Amblin films like The Goonies, Skeleton Crew aims to balance child-friendly elements with darker plot points. While it features a group of children, series creator Christopher Ford and director Jon Watts emphasize that it is not just a kids’ show and will appeal to both children and adults.

Will Skeleton Crew Crossover with other Star Wars shows?

Many current Star Wars projects are set within a short timeframe. In a recent interview, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni discussed the complexity and opportunities of these overlapping timelines. While writing the fourth season of The Mandalorian, Favreau mentioned an interesting aspect of Skeleton Crew. Although this doesn't confirm a crossover, the connection between the creators and similar timelines suggests it could happen. If a crossover does occur, it will likely be in the second season of Skeleton Crew or the fourth season of The Mandalorian.

The Acolyte has finished its first season, but more Star Wars content is coming in 2024. Young Jedi Adventures season 2 premieres on Disney+ on August 8. Andor season 2, initially set for this August, has been delayed past 2024. At Star Wars Celebration 2023, three new live-action films were announced, including one with Daisy Ridley's return, aiming for releases in 2025 and 2026.

Who is Directing Star Wars: Skeleton Crew?

Skeleton Crew revealed an impressive director lineup at the Star Wars Celebration. Helming the series are Jon Watts (Spider-Man: No Way Home), David Lowery (The Green Knight), Daniels (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Jake Schreier (Beef), and "The Mandalorian" veterans Bryce Dallas Howard and Lee Isaac Chung.

The series, created by Jon Watts, emerged from an idea he pitched to Jon Favreau during the production of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Watts serves as the showrunner, co-writer, director, and executive producer. Joining him as the main writer is Christopher Ford, his collaborator on Clown, Cop Car, and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Ford also holds the title of executive producer, alongside Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, who oversee the entire slate of the Mando-era series.

Where is Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Filmed?

The filming began by September 2022 at Manhattan Beach Studios in Los Angeles County. It officially ended in January 2023, and George Cottle, the stunt coordinator, wrote on Instagram, “That’s a Wrap on Skeleton Crew!! Once again I was lucky enough to be surrounded by some of the most amazing stunt performers I have ever worked with!! I feel so lucky to work with you all! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication! So so excited for this one!”

Behind the Scenes

The show's creators, Kathleen Kennedy, Jon Favreau, and Dave Filoni, serve as executive producers, continuing their roles from The Mandalorian. The production is handled by Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company. Jude Law also co-directed and co-produced the show.
