The second season of the Emmy-winning Korean series has finally been given an official release date by Netflix. We now know when Squid Game Season 2 will premiere on the streaming giant, and we are thrilled to stream it online. Moreover, director Hwang Dong-hyuk said it would be “worth the wait.” 

The first season was one of Netflix's most-watched shows, and it also earned critical acclaim, as well as several accolades. It received 14 Emmy nominations and won 6 of them, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Lee Jung-jae), Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Hwang Dong-Hyuk), and Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series (Lee Yoo-mi).

Release Date

The second season of Squid Game will premiere on Netflix on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2024.

Plot

It's been three years since winning Squid Game, but Player 456 is still resolved to find the creators of the game and put an end to this cruel competition once and for all. He uses his prize money to pay for his quest, and tries searching for the man in the suit playing ddakji in the subway. However, when his efforts finally bear fruits, he realizes that his journey to take down the organization will be significantly tougher than he imagined. Unfortunately, to end the game, he has to re-enter it.

Official Teaser

The previous teaser trailer from Netflix shows Gong Yoo reprising his role as the Salesman, and we see him try to recruit new players to the game. In the video titled "You're Invited," he asks, "Would you like to play a game with me?" Watch below.

As part of Netflix's Geeked Week event in Atlanta, the streaming giant dropped a special teaser for the second season of Squid Game. We see contestants prepare to play the game as the words "The game never stops" flash on the screen. We also hear a voice saying in Korean, "We’re ready to start the game." Check it out:

A teaser trailer was released on Monday, Aug. 12, 2024, which gave fans a first look at the new players. We can only see Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun, and the faces of the other contestants weren't revealed. See below:

Netflix previously released a short clip in which runners take off from their marks but are soon overtaken by players wearing the infamous green suits. We see many people fumbling and falling down while the Front Man asks if we want to play again.

Earlier this year, Netflix offered audiences a sizzle reel where we got a glimpse of Gi-hun answering a mysterious call, with a voice saying, "You’re going to regret the choice you made," to which he answered, "I will find you. No matter what it takes."

Official Trailer

On Nov. 27, 2024, Netflix released the official trailer for Squid Game season 2. Player 456 is back and this time he wants to put a stop to the games. But it isn't easy as the participants have their own reasons for going there. Filled with new games and new names, this season promises to be a blockbuster again. Check it out below:

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk on Season 2

Dong-hyuk, the director, writer, and executive producer of Squid Game, wrote a letter saying, "On the first day we began shooting Season 2, I remember thinking, “Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the world of Squid Game.” It almost felt surreal. I wonder how it will feel for you to be back in Squid Game after three years, as well. Seong Gi-hun who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1 returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either."

Will there be a Season 3?

Yes! Netflix has announced that the third and final season of Squid Game will debut in 2025.

Behind the Scenes

Dong-hyuk, an Emmy winner, will write, direct, and executive produce season two. He was the first Asian director to win the award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series at the 2022 Primetime Emmys. Chae Kyoung-sun serves as the production designer.
