Spotify Is Rolling Out Support for Offline Playback on Wear OS Smartwatches
Published on August 24, 2021
Spotify has been releasing apps for smartwatches over the past few weeks, and we finally have word on when the Apple watchOS version will be out. The new watchOS app will be rolling out to Apple Watch users in the next week. To access the update, you need to head to your iOS device and update Spotify to the latest version to get access to the Watch app download.
Unfortunately, the new Spotify app does not come with LTE streaming capabilities, and users do not have the option to download songs to their iOS devices using the app either. However, you have full media controls including play, pause, skip and other important controls for your library and podcasts. Most of the features are available in the Apple Now Playing app with Spotify integration natively and it also allows you to control playback from any audio source.
If you are a Spotify Premium user, you will not receive some of the premium-only features using the new app. You are better off using the native Now Playing app if you want to stream music via LTE to download music directly to your smartwatch.
The ability to listen to music and podcasts offline will be added soon to the app. Offline access to music is available on the Spotify apps on Garmin Fenix 5 Plus, and Samsung Gear smartwatches and Apple Watch owners can expect the feature shortly.
The app comes with Spotify Connect support which allows you to manage your connections to Bluetooth devices. With the music streaming company emphasizing that this is just the first version of the app, it more than likely means that we will be receiving more features down the line.
