Popular music streaming app Spotify was released for all Sky Q boxes today. With Spotify revealing plans to bring the music streaming service to the platform way back in February, the music subscription is finally available to all Sky Q boxes from today.
All Sky Q owners will find a Spotify app on their homepage. Users will be able to stream the service for free using the ad-supported free model, or they can opt-in for Spotify Premium. Existing Spotify users can also link their accounts to the box to avail the new features that are exclusive to the TV version of the app which includes a new Kids Mode and a widescreen UI, designed for users with widescreen televisions.
Music will be streamed through the Sky Soundbox, and the TV company has added that it is also possible for streamers to stream music to their TV speakers using Bluetooth or AirPlay if their TVs support either connectivity technology.
Spotify integration is not exactly an innovative feature with most popular TVs having access to the streaming service. But with the new addition of Spotify to Sky TV, users with older models of Sky Q boxes will now get access to the service.
Spotify is not the only platform Sky has partnered with for 2018. They recently announced their partnership with Netflix, which will allow Sky users to stream Netflix content on their Sky Q boxes. When this feature launches has not been mentioned by either Sky or Netflix, but we should be seeing the streaming giant’s app launch on Sky sometime this year. Customers are also set to receive an HDR update this year as well as an increase in the amount of 4K content available to users. Sky is implementing machine learning to help the platform become a full-fledged entertainment system rather than being a simple way to watch TV content in your living room.
