CinemaCon 2025 brought an exciting revelation for Marvel fans: The official title of Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man film is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has stepped in as director. But with little information revealed so far, speculation about the plot and cast is running wild.
The title Brand New Day isn’t just a fresh start for Peter Parker—it’s a direct nod to the controversial Amazing Spider-Man comic book arc published in 2008. That storyline followed the infamous One More Day arc, where Peter sacrificed his marriage to Mary Jane Watson in a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May’s life.
The fallout saw the Marvel Universe forgetting Spider-Man’s true identity, mirroring the conclusion of No Way Home, where Peter used Doctor Strange’s spell to erase himself from everyone’s memory. While the MCU is unlikely to introduce Mephisto into Peter’s story, the Brand New Day title hints at a Peter Parker forced to navigate life alone.
The previous film’s ending saw him rebuilding his existence, with MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) no longer recognizing him. This sequel could explore Peter’s struggle with his new status quo while introducing fresh challenges—possibly even a deal with the devil to reclaim his lost life.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton teased the direction of the movie at CinemaCon, stating, “I’m spending my time exploring the next stage of this amazing character with a team of the most incredible artists in the world. We’re all, just daily, nerding out over the suit, how to swing, how to create an event, an emotional story, and a ride that we haven’t really seen before.” (via Variety)
Given that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to release after Avengers: Doomsday, the film could deal with the aftermath of the major MCU crossover. Could the multiverse play a role in Peter’s attempt to regain his lost life? Will he seek out familiar faces, like MJ and Ned, and attempt to restore their memories? There’s also the possibility that Peter will make a dark choice—similar to the comics—by striking a deal with an unknown force to alter reality once again.
Another compelling angle could involve a new romance. With MJ seemingly out of Peter’s life for now, will he meet a new love interest? The introduction of Sadie Sink to the cast has sparked speculation that she may be playing a key role, possibly Peter's love interest, Black Cat.
Sony has yet to confirm the full cast, but Tom Holland will, of course, return as Peter Parker. Speaking to CinemaCon attendees via a recorded message, Holland teased, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a fresh start. It is exactly that. That’s all I can say.” (via Variety)
Holland, currently filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey alongside Matt Damon, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway, acknowledged the cliffhanger from No Way Home, saying, “I know we left you with a massive cliffhanger,” (via Deadline) while remaining tight-lipped about the plot. He assured fans, “That’s all I’ve been allowed to say. And I’m well over the hump of giving away spoilers, so don’t be worried. I’m not going to do that today.” (via Variety)
Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are expected to reprise their roles as MJ and Ned. Spider-Man: No Way Home left their relationships with Peter unresolved, making their return almost certain.
One of the most intriguing additions is Sadie Sink (Stranger Things). While her role remains under wraps, speculation suggests she could portray Jean Grey, setting up the long-awaited X-Men integration into the MCU. Alternatively, she could play a brand-new love interest for Peter, filling the void left by MJ.
While No Way Home brought back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for an epic Spider-Verse crossover, Garfield has stated he won’t be returning this time around. (via Deadline) Maguire’s involvement is also uncertain, though anything is possible given the MCU’s embrace of the multiverse.
Marvel has yet to announce a villain for Brand New Day, but with No Way Home bringing back classic villains, could we see another returning foe? Harry Osborn’s story in the Brand New Day comics might hint at the return of a Green Goblin variant.
With a new director at the helm and a story that seems poised to redefine Peter Parker’s future, Spider-Man: Brand New Day could mark a major turning point for the character in the MCU. Whether it’s through lost memories, multiversal consequences, or a new villain’s rise, one thing is clear: Peter Parker is in for the ride of his life.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to premiere on July 31, 2026, in theaters, and we’ll keep updating you with new details as they emerge.
