Sonos has submitted filings to the FCC that suggest the company is working on a new speaker device. The filings were spotted by Variety and other publications, and suggest that this new speaker could potentially be a follow up on the Playbar which was introduced back in 2013. According to the FCC records, this new device has an HDMI port. If we recall, the old Playbar has an optical in port. Other than that, the label filing has a microphone icon on it which suggests that the device will have a support for Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. This comes as no surprise since their first speaker Sonos One has the same feature. The label filing also shows that the new device's interface is very similar to the Sonos One's.
Label filing also shows that the device is of a much larger size than the Playbar. The Verge says that this could also be a follow-up version of the Playbase. Considering that Playbase was introduced only last year, this would be a very small time frame for a new model to come out. For now, we know that the model number of the speaker is S14 which doesn't say a lot. The company refused to give any details except that they are constantly working to improve their customers' experience. And filed documents show very little other than that it is referred to as a smart speaker and later as high-performance, all in one home theater speaker and that it will be a part of the Sonos' home sound system. For now, we can only wait for Sonos to give us a more detailed description or any kind of information leak about their new product.
