Social media platforms can often be a source of change, and with voting figures dipping in the United States amongst the younger demographic, Snapchat launched a campaign recently to generate more voter registrations. So far, the campaign has been highly successful with over 400,000 voters registering in just two weeks.
The Snapchat campaign has been highly successful in Georgia, Florida, and Texas. The app is quite popular among teenagers and drawing their attention to the upcoming elections definitely has the potential to help. The company is not only allowing users to register themselves for the elections using the app; video messages are being sent out to spread awareness as well.
Snapchat partnered with TurboVote to offer voter registration services, which is a nonpartisan registration portal. Head of public policy at Snapchat Jennifer Stout revealed “There is no more powerful form of self-expression than the ability to vote. The numbers we’ve seen have been fantastic and have shown us that our users have been some of the most engaged communities out there.”
While the registration numbers are quite promising, it is unknown how many users will show up at the polls. The last midterm elections in 2014 had only 17.1% of the 18 to 24-year-old demographic voting, and a number of social media campaigns may bolster the figures this year on November 6.
Other social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Google, and Facebook have been pushing registration drives as well, but none of them have been successful as Snapchat. Going by past records, young American voters are among the least consistent voters. Social media platforms may finally be able to push enough young voters to go out and vote.
