Shifting Gears is filmed on location at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California.
A pilot episode for the series was ordered in March 2024, written by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, and produced by 20th Television. The project received a series order from ABC in July 2024. Tim Allen and John Pasquin serve as executive producers, with Pasquin also directing the pilot.
Other executive producers include Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, and others. Michelle Nader joined as showrunner and executive producer in September 2024, while Kat Dennings is credited as a producer.
