In the Severance season 2 finale, Outie Mark descended into the depths of Lumon to save Gemma from the Cold Harbor. However, when there, he switched to Innie Mark and chose Helly instead of his wife. As Gemma stood outside the locked door, she watched Mark turn his back to her and reach for Helly.
There has been a lot of speculation regarding his reason for doing so. In this article, we will discuss why Mark Scout chose Helly over Gemma.
Innie Mark chose Helly because he battled Lumon with her by his side whereas Gemma was a past that only lived in the memories of Outie Mark. So, Helly and Mark’s relationship was forged due to the day-to-day circumstances they were in. In fact, they are one of the strongest dynamics of the show itself.
Also, Innie Mark is a fully realized being by himself who has his own wants and needs. So, he probably didn’t want to sacrifice what he wanted for someone he had no personal attachment to. Another point is that the show doesn’t clarify whether an Innie can live outside of Lumon. So, when he was at the door, his survival instincts might have kicked in and to save himself, he turned around.
The last point is that the fight against Lumon isn’t over yet. Yes, Cold Harbor is gone, but Lumon as an entity still exists, and who knows how many more secrets, they are hiding still. Mark could have turned around because Lumon still exists.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Adam Scott revealed why Innie Mark chose Helly and decided to stay back at Lumon rather than go with Gemma to the outside world. He said:
“I mean, for Innie Mark, it's a no-brainer, right? But it's difficult — actually, it's not, because I think emotionally it's a no-brainer, but logic-wise, they went through logically what's in front of them and decided, 'You should go,' but their hearts told them something else. And I think for Innie Mark and Helly, it's one thing, but then watching it, I feel horribly for Gemma. Obviously, it's heartbreaking.”
He further said:
“And for Outie Mark too, they finally were right there, and it got pulled out from under them. So I don't know, I have very mixed feelings about it because I think of it as a two-pronged decision. And when you have colliding interests, but you're in the same body, then it's going to come to a head at some point.”
