Severance Season 2 Episode 5 Explained: Helly’s Return, A Mysterious man, Mark’s Distrust, and more

Severance season 2 episode 4 showed that the innies had found out that Helena Eagen was masquerading as Helly R., while Irving B. was dismissed for almost drowning an Eagan. Additionally, we also found out new secrets about the Eagan family mythos. Severance Season 2 Episode 5, tilted Trojan’s Horse begins with a cold open. In this article, we will discuss what was revealed in the latest episode. 

The Mysterious man 

Severance season 2 episode 5 begins with a man whose face we don’t see. He is whistling the tune of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and rolling a squeaky cart down a hallway. He requests a tray of dental picks from Felicia, the head of Optics & Design. Everything about this interaction is eerie. 

Mark wants to Recall his Innie’s Memories

Dr. Reghabi has been staying at Mark’s house and he wants to continue with the process of recalling more of his innie’s memories. However, Dr. Reghabi doesn’t think that he can bear the trauma right away after the reintegration. 

Helena’s Predicament in Severance Season 2 Episode 5

On the other hand, Helena Eagan meets with Drummond and Natalie to talk about the fact that she was found as a mole and almost drowned by Irving B. She finds out that neither has informed her father of what happened. Natalie talks about Mark’s work to her and mentions that it’s at 81%. 

This is a callback to the season 2 premiere where it’s revealed that Mark's work on "Cold Harbor" is connected to Gemma/Ms. Casey. Natalie also says that Helly will be okay to return but Helena says that her innies have tried to kill her. She wants to return to the severed floor as herself, but Lumon doesn’t think that’s a good idea. 

Mark S. won’t work with Helly so Drummond suggests that they do what he wants. Natalie mysteriously states that the Board appreciates Helena’s sacrifice. 

Helly Returns 

The real Helly returns to Lumon where she is shocked to meet Miss Huang. Later on, Helly, Mark, and Dylan G. meet Milchick with Helly attacking the latter with numerous questions. She wants to know why was Irving trying to drown her.

Mark asks her if she is spying on the MDR team and wonders if she has even come back at all. Milchick tells her about the Glasgow block. All this makes Helly disgusted at being impersonated. She feels violated because as per her, Helena had no right to take her identity. It’s fascinating that innies feel that they are distinct from the outies. 

Irving gets a Funeral and Helly Tries to Convince Mark 

In Severance season 2 episode 5, Dylan G. wonders when Irving B. is returning and Milchick says that he has gone on an elongated cruise voyage. Dylan isn’t happy with this answer. When the Macrodats return, they find that their four-desk setup has been changed to a three-desk one. 

This means that Irving B. isn’t coming back anytime soon. Dylan wants a funeral for Irving and looks visibly upset at this sudden setup change. Milchick works to gather the materials however Miss Huang says that MDR shouldn’t have a funeral as it would make them feel like people. 

Mark and Helly R. also have a conversation where the latter references what happened between them and says that it’s not her fault that her outie impersonated her. She pushes for them to talk more about it, but Mark wants to forget it all and he also doesn’t trust her. 

The funeral ceremony consists of mugs with Irving’s face printed on them, an 8-bit screensaver of him, and a melon bar with a centerpiece that’s carved to look like his head. Dylan G. gives the eulogy, but Mark S. starts leaving before Helly questions him. 

During the conversation between them, Dylan asks Mark S. if he has told Helly that Ms. Casey is his wife. This shocks Helly but Mark says that it’s his outie’s wife. She isn’t willing to let this go and follows him. Mark says that nothing they have been doing till now matters because Helena informed the bosses about everything. Helly says that she and Helena aren’t the same people, and that Mark needs to trust her again.
