Hundreds of torrent websites have gone down over the years, but very few hold the reputation that SevenTorrents did. The website has shut down all operations after 10 years of service and having served more than 40 million unique users over the years. With an oppressive anti-piracy environment and the entertainment industry going after most piracy websites, staying alive for so long is quite the feat.
Last year the website saw six million unique visitors according to SevenTorrents. The website owners announced yesterday that they would be shutting down the website and moving the torrent database to a new domain. Users will continue being able to use their existing accounts on the new WatchSoMuch domain.
“Today we have decided to retire. But this is not the end for you, and we will not let you down, there is a good news for you. We have talked with the owners of the professional friend site WatchSoMuch which is doing same thing as we were doing but in a better way, it has a super fast search and modern and mobile-friendly design,” SevenTorrents mentioned in their final announcement.
The website has weathered a fair share of legal action over the years. The main domain of SevenTorrents was blocked in 2014 in the UK after the Motion Pictures Association filed a complaint through British ISPs. Other domains were subsequently blocked as well in 2016. Regardless of the legal pressure, the website has continued operating fairly successfully. The new domain WatchSoMuch already has thousands of new members, and it is likely that more users will move to the new service following the announcement. According to SevenTorrents, users are not concerned about their data being moved to the new service. However, they are upset over the closure of the aging website.
