The six-episode Senna series will trace the iconic Formula 1 driver’s career from his early days in England, competing in Formula Ford, through to his tragic end at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Beginning in 1981, it will explore his rise through Formula 3 and his first F1 start with Toleman in 1984, culminating in his legendary drives, such as his second-place finish at the rain-soaked Monaco Grand Prix.

The series will focus on pivotal moments in Senna's journey, including his victories with Lotus, his rivalry with Alain Prost at McLaren, and his legendary battles at the Japanese Grand Prix. Widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in F1 history, Senna won three world titles, 41 Grand Prix victories, 65 pole positions, and 80 podiums between 1984 and 1994. The series follows his remarkable career and personal journey, capturing his legacy as a legendary and passionate driver.

Who was Ayrton Senna?

Ayrton Senna was a legendary Brazilian Formula 1 driver, born on March 21, 1960. He began his racing career at a young age, starting with karts at ten and quickly advancing through the ranks, winning the Formula Three championship before making his F1 debut in 1984 with Toleman. He achieved his first World Championship in 1988 with McLaren and won a total of three F1 titles. 

Known for his fierce rivalry with Alain Prost, Senna claimed championships in 1990 and 1991. He moved to Williams in 1994, but tragically died in a crash at the San Marino Grand Prix at 34. Off the track, Senna had relationships with TV host Xuxa and Adriane Galisteu.

What Happened to Ayrton Senna?

Ayrton Senna tragically died on May 1, 1994, during the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola. After the death of Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger in qualifying, Senna, despite being urged to withdraw, insisted on racing. He met with his former rival Alain Prost, and they discussed forming a Grand Prix Drivers' Association for safety. 

On race day, Senna lost control of his car on the seventh lap and crashed into the concrete wall at Tamburello corner. He died from his injuries. Following his death, Brazil declared three days of mourning, and a state funeral was held with many drivers, including Prost, escorting his coffin.

The production took place in key locations across Brazil, including São Paulo and Angra dos Reis in Rio de Janeiro. Additional filming occurred in Argentina, Uruguay, and the United Kingdom, making this an ambitious international project. 

Behind the Scenes

Senna, the upcoming series, is helmed by Vicente Amorim, who serves as both showrunner and co-director alongside Júlia Rezende. The project is a collaboration with Senna's family and is produced by the renowned Brazilian production company Gullane. The company, established in 1996 by brothers Caio and Fabiano Gullane, is responsible for over 40 films and 20 television series. Gustavo Bragança is the head writer, with additional contributions from Álvaro Campos, Rafael Spínola, Thais Falcão, and Álvaro Mamute.
