Samsung Becomes the First Android OEM to Offer Four Years of Security Updates
Last updated June 14, 2021
Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus owners are in for an early Christmas treat with a new software update bringing One UI and Android Pie globally. The update is slowly rolling out to all regions and was first spotted across Europe.
One UI is a brand-new user interface designed by Samsung that makes it easier to use apps on larger devices. With the brand being known for great devices like its Note series with large displays, the new UI does a great job of making such phones easier to use. Other improvements to performance and apps have also been thrown into the mix.
Samsung has become much faster at rolling out updates compared to older versions of Android. However, the company is still far behind brands like OnePlus, Nokia and other manufacturers. Google’s own Pixel devices, as well as devices that fall under Project Treble, receive updates before any other Android devices.
Project Treble was introduced by Google last year, but it failed to create the impact that users were expecting. The adoption rate of the latest Android updates has increased over time, but it is nothing to write home about. Manufacturers are often not keen on releasing updates for their devices outside the upper mid-range or high-end categories. Samsung and other manufacturers have failed to update devices to the latest version of Android in time for most of their devices.
Even though Android Pie was released months ago, only 21.5% of Android devices are running Android Oreo or later. Samsung is striving to make changes to its update schedule with the update for S9 and S9 Plus coming to us earlier than expected.
