Last updated July 10, 2021
Qualcomm has announced the availability of the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform, a highly efficient SoC for smartwatches based on Wear OS. The Snapdragon Wear 3100 comes with the promise of more battery life and a more interactive experience. Qualcomm says that it is collaborating with Google on Wear OS and smartwatch markers such as Fossil, Louis Vuitton, and Montblanc to launch smartwatches with the new SoC.
The Snapdragon Wear 3100 sports a quad-core Cortex A7 cluster, an integrated DSP, and a QCC1110 ultra-low-power co-processor. The QCC1110 sips very little power and is optimized for deep-learning, whose capabilities can be extended over time. The Wear 3100 also incorporates the PMW3100 power management sub-system for very high power-efficiency. Qualcomm says that the 5th generation 4G LTE modem in the SoC is paired with Gallium Arsenide power amplifiers for increased power efficiency.
The new Wear 3100 platform also offers personalized smartwatch experiences including an Enhanced Ambient Mode, a Dedicated Sports Experience, and a Traditional Watch Mode. All these modes allow the user to customize their watch experience and allow different watch complications. For each of these experiences, the display and sensor processing and offloaded from the quad-core A7s to the QCC1110 co-processor.
Qualcomm also promises improved battery life to the tune of 4 to 12 hours compared to the Snapdragon Wear 2100. The SoC offers a Personalized Sports Experience that only turns on the GPS and heart rate for the duration of the activity. For those who just prefer a basic watch experience, the Wear 3100 can offer up to a week's worth of battery life.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 is already under mass production and will come in three variants targeting Bluetooth and Wi-Fi tethered, GPS-based, and 4G LTE connected smartwatches.
