PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Sues Epic Games’ Fortnite Over Copyright Infringement
Last updated May 26, 2021
Bluehole Studios, the developers behind popular battle royale game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, has dropped its lawsuit against Epic Games’ Fortnite. With PUBG gaining massive popularity last year, Epic Games released its own take on the battle royale genre in the form of Fortnite Battle Royale. Epic Games’ title managed to overtake PUBG’s popularity in no time due to multiple reasons including its free-to-play model, lower hardware requirements, and building mechanics. Both titles are based on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4.
The PUBG developers expressed their intent to take on Fortnite and other battle royale games which led to multiple lawsuits filed against many games of the genre including Epic Games’ title. Bluehole Studios claimed that Fortnite is guilty of copying PUBG and it divided not only the gaming industry but also the fans of the topic. While PUBG popularized the genre, it is not the first battle royale game and Fortnite has its own unique features that make it stand out. Despite the differences, PUBG developers Bluehole and owner Tencent went ahead with the lawsuit.
With a copyright infringement accusation unlikely to hold up in court both Tencent and Bluehole Studios are backing out of the lawsuit. Fortnite has been growing at a rapid pace with over 125 million registered players in just a year after launch while Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds has seen a decline in userbase over the past few months. Fortnite has had its fair share of controversy as well with Sony blocking cross-play between PS4 owners and Nintendo Switch owners recently.
The battle royale market is flooded with many new and upcoming titles trying to become the best battle royale game out there. Which battle royale game do you prefer and why? Let us know in the comments below. Get instant updates on TechNadu’s Facebook page, or Twitter handle.
