Plex users are set to receive a massive update that is bringing in a lot of changes to the platform. The biggest change coming to the platform is the introduction of a new subtitles feature. Users were previously reliant on adding subtitles manually and were forced to sit through advertisements and a complicated menu to add files from their desktop. With the latest update, enabling subtitles will not require users to go back to their computer. Subtitle files can be remotely added via your network from your computer.
The feature is not yet available, but it will soon become available to Plex Pass users via the Pass Preview program within the next few days. Users who do not have access to Plex Pass will receive the feature later this year.
Plex is also removing a number of features that do not see much use. The developers explained the decision behind removing a number of features stating “We didn’t approach the process lightly; we looked over usage numbers and took into account maintenance costs and general customer satisfaction. In some cases, we have plans for a future in which a better replacement shows up.”
The features that are getting removed include plugins; the Watch Later feature and Cloud sync. The three features see very little usage and the app wants to declutter its user interface to enable a cleaner and simpler experience.
Offline sync is being reworked, and it should work without bugs. Many users were unable to use the feature effectively due to a large number of performance hiccups and bugs. Also, Plex is currently working with client and server groups to improve the feature, so it works as intended. The music player is also set to receive a number of improvements that the developers did not go into details with.
