Plex announced its traditional grid view earlier this year, and the feature was promised across all platforms. However, grid view was exclusive to the web app until now with Apple TV receiving the feature starting today. Mac OS and iOS will be receiving the update as well in the near future.
Despite the much-hyped and requested grid view, Plex believes that their flagship Discover mode is still the best way to find and view content on the platform. Most live streaming services choose to use a box-style UI for showcasing TV schedules. But a grid-style UI is what most older users are accustomed to from traditional cable television days. Grid view on Plex was first made exclusively available to Plex Pass users only, but the feature is now slowly being made available to other platforms. The feature allows users to filter through content by day, time and HD availability. Watch and Record features are built into the Grid View UI as well.
The Plex team revealed their design insights behind the new Grid View in their blog, “When we set out to build the best DVR and Live TV platform on the planet, we knew there would be challenges. We built a scheduling engine that reins in the multiverse by considering every possible recording schedule, then picking the best one, much like the work of the late, great Stephen Hawking.”
Cord cutting is on the rise, and the traditional grid view can be appealing to users who are moving away from traditional cable connections. The Discover feature also got some minor tweaks in the latest update. Users are now able to see highlights of upcoming shows as well as a glimpse of the most popular shows on the platform. The app also includes sub-categories to make finding content easier.
