The intense Malayalam-language thriller Officer on Duty has arrived on Netflix, bringing its gripping crime drama and shocking twists to a wider audience. Directed by Jithu Ashraf, the film originally hit theaters in February and stars Kunchacko Boban as Harishankar, a volatile police officer whose latest case forces him to confront his own past.Â
What starts as a seemingly routine investigation into gold chain theft unravels into a disturbing web of sexual abuse, blackmail, and revenge. The film keeps audiences on edge with its dark themes, gritty action sequences, and a climax that leaves a lasting impact.
The film wastes no time in setting a grim tone, opening with the shocking suicide of a police officer named Joseph. As he hangs himself, a group of young men and women watch with eerie smiles, hinting at something far more sinister.
We then meet Harishankar, a former Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) who has been demoted to Circle Inspector (CI) due to his uncontrollable temper. His return to duty lands him in a minor case involving a stolen gold chain, but his instincts tell him there’s more to the story. As he digs deeper, he discovers a disturbing pattern of young girls being blackmailed with intimate videos, leading to devastating consequences—including suicides.
Harishankar’s investigation takes a deeply personal turn when he realizes that his own daughter, Nila, was a victim of the same crime. Overcome with rage, he killed one of the blackmailers, Shyam, an act that led to his suspension. However, this was only the beginning of his nightmare.
The blackmail and sexual exploitation are orchestrated by a ruthless gang led by Christy Savio (Vishak Nair), alongside Celine (Leya Mammen), Anna Louis (Aishwarya Raj), Lance (Amit Eapen), and the now-deceased Shyam. Their cruelty knows no bounds, and they stop at nothing to silence anyone who threatens their operation.
As Harishankar gets closer to the truth, the gang begins eliminating witnesses, including Thomas, a fellow cop who had helped cover up Shyam’s murder. They also target Harishankar’s wife Geetha (Priyamani) and their younger daughter.
The final act is a brutal confrontation between Harishankar and the gang. Christy and his accomplices attack Geetha and her father, but the elderly man—an ex-army officer—fights back, setting one of them on fire before being killed himself. The gang chases Geetha and the little girl into the jungle, where Harishankar finally catches up.
Fueled by controlled fury, he engages in a brutal fight against the gang, taking them down one by one. As he strangles Christy to death, the police arrive just in time to stop him. While Harishankar is left battered and bleeding, the gang members escape, leaving their fate uncertain.
However, the film’s final scene delivers a shocking twist. As Harishankar watches the news, he learns that all the gang members have been found dead—poisoned. A flashback reveals that Harishankar himself ensured their demise, watching as they vomited blood and collapsed.
The ending suggests that Harishankar has finally exacted his revenge, taking justice into his own hands. While he reconciles with his wife and daughter, celebrating a hopeful new beginning, the film leaves a lingering question—has Harishankar truly overcome his demons, or has he simply embraced them in a different way?
With its dark themes, shocking twists, and intense performances, Officer on Duty delivers a gripping crime thriller that stays with audiences long after the credits roll.
