We all made fun of Apple Maps in the past for its inaccuracy. People have landed in different countries by following its apparent disastrous directions. Last generation Apple mapping technology was a joke, but Apple has been listening to the market’s aggravation. And now it is ready with the new maps that it has built from scratch and has some major pickups compared to its last generation.
As per TechCrunch, Apple is planning to introduce new maps in the US with a complete modernized mapping data. The maps will be available first for the US audience and then later will be released for the rest of the world, over the coming years.
The new mapping data from Apple will release in installments and only to limited people, starting from the enrolled users in the iOS 12 beta. First, the updating mapping data will roll out in San Francisco and the Bay Area, and by the end of the year, it will reportedly cover entire Northern California.
Apple service leader Eddy Cue informed TechCrunch that the new Maps from Apple will come out section by section over the next year. Cue also mentioned that Apple has done a huge investment in the mapping to build a sophisticated mapping platform for the future.
This move by Apple will shun all the mapping data from the third party, which made the majority of Apple Maps since 2012. Now, Apple has plans to built its own database and rely on its own sources: iPhones and its sensor packed vans. Apple will use travel data from millions of users to make sensible judgments, say to get the latest information on traffic and road openings.
Apple has promised to take sincere precautions to maintain the user’s privacy and sustain an end-to-end encryption for its mapping tool. Apple is also reworking its design to provide its users a detailed mapping interface which is both easier in navigation and rich in experience. This means that the new Apple maps would be much easier to read with defined waterways, woods and streets.
The company has been working on its new Apple Maps for the last four years and aims to fix the reliability issue that it faced despite licensing data from well-known brands. This is again an Apple’s move to compete against Google. It might take Apple another half a decade to build an equally competitive product compared to Google Maps.
As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago, but the second best time is right now.
