Netflix's Netflix Geeked Twitter account confirmed on Tuesday that production for the live-action series of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga is officially underway! The first season will have ten episodes, with Eiichiro Oda serving as executive producer. According to reports, Netflix will exclusively stream the live-action series.

The live-action series will be produced by Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between producer Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios. Matt Owens will serve as the upcoming show's writer, while Steven Maeda and Becky Clements will be executive producers. Adelstein confirmed in a video message shown at Jump Festa in 2017 that the live-action television series adaptation of the One Piece manga will start with the 'East Blue arc' and will "broaden from there." He added that the series promises to create "a true One Piece" after discussing the project with Oda.

Mangaka Eiichiro Oda began serializing the One Piece manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in 1997, while the ongoing anime adaptation premiered in 1999. The anime's 1,000th episode debuted in November 2021. The franchise also has an upcoming anime film titled One Piece Film Red that is slated to release on August 6, 2022.

One Piece Live-Action Series Cast, Plot and More

The One Piece manga's story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. With his pirate crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line searching for the world's ultimate treasure known as the "One Piece" to become the next King of the Pirates.

In November, Netflix revealed the prominent cast members for the live-action One Piece series. Netflix Geekend's Twitter post also shows two photos of the cast during a day of filming. When the cast was initially announced, One Piece series creator Eiichiro Oda shared the following message:

"We've been working with NETFLIX and Tomorrow Studios on the massive project that is the Hollywood live-action series adaptation of ONE PIECE! How many years has it been since it was announced, right? I know, I know! But rest assured, we've been making steady progress all along! It's not easy when you're working with people from different cultures! But it's precisely that process that can yield something special! For now, we're able to announce the main cast! Rather, we need to hurry and announce it, or else it'll be leaked, apparently! Hilarious, lol. Their face, the size of their mouths and hands, their aura, the way they carry themselves, their voice, their acting skills, their height, the balance amongst the Straw Hat Crew, etc.

We decided on this cast after numerous discussions involving people around the world! These are the people who will be our Straw Hat Pirates! It'll take a bit more time to get this show done, but we'll continue to do our best to deliver a show that we're confident will be enjoyed by everyone around the world!
