Here is the list of films added to the National Film Registry in 2024:
The National Film Registry, established in 1988, preserves up to 25 films each year that are deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant to American history. Films selected for inclusion must be at least ten years old. The films are chosen by the librarian of Congress, in consultation with the National Film Preservation Board, which includes film experts from various organizations.Â
The Registry is diverse, including everything from Hollywood classics to independent films, documentaries, home movies, and music videos. Since 1997, the public has been able to submit nominations for films to be considered for inclusion.
You can submit movie nominations for the National Film Registry year-round on the Library of Congress' website. However, films will only be considered for the 2025 list until August 15, 2025. Visit loc.gov/film to cast your vote.Â
Last year's selections included iconic films like Home Alone, Apollo 13, and 12 Years a Slave.
The TV special honoring the 25 films added to the National Film Registry will air on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2024, at 8 pm ET.Â
