Guy Ritchie’s MobLand series has captivated audiences from its first episode. The series, starring Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, and Helen Mirren, follows the Harrigans, a family that deals with guns and drugs. The first episode sets up the main players in the game. We get a glimpse of the drama and the characters' motivations. In this article, we will explore how MobLand’s episode 1 ends.Â
Tommy and Eddie, two young people from opposing families, run into each other on a night out with different friends. Initially, they agree to head to a club together despite their families’ public rivalries. But as the night deepens, something happens that forces them to flee the club.Â
In a cocaine haze, Eddie stabs a man he thought was going to do the same to him. The boys get chased but eventually find each other. Even though Tommy has reservations about following Eddie out of this situation, he still decides to leave with him.Â
Except, Tommy is never seen again after that. This alarms his family, and Harry confronts Eddie about Tommy’s whereabouts since he was last seen with him. However, Eddie denies being out with Tommy in the first place. This makes him come across as the guilty party in Tommy's case.Â
Adding to this is the fact that his father mentioned that he came home covered in blood. However, he looked quite clean during the stabbing and also when he met Tommy later. So, is Eddie responsible for Tommy’s disappearance? Or is this a red herring?Â
MobLand ends with Conrad shooting his childhood friend and the current associate of the family, Archie. Maeve suspects that Archie is working for the Stevensons as opposed to them. She tells Conrad this, and her suspicions seemingly come true when Archie balks at Conrad’s elaborate plan to take control of London’s fentanyl trade.
Maeve had said during the family chat that Archie would try to talk Conrad into letting the Stevensons control fentanyl and to focus their attention elsewhere. This makes Conrad fetch a gun as Maeve reveals to Archie that they know he’s a traitor. However, Conrad isn’t too convinced even then, and he hesitates to shoot his longtime friend.Â
But he ultimately kills Archie, which makes it seem like Maeve is the one who is really in control in this family. When Maeve tries to comfort Conrad, he snaps at her. So, is he second-guessing his decision to end Archie? Or is he mad at Maeve for forcing his hand without allowing him to investigate?
In the first episode of the MobLand series, Harry meets Richie at a neutral site where both parties could negotiate- Moody’s Gym. Soon, Richie faces the barrel of Harry’s associate Kiko’s gun. When Conrad is called to make the final decision, he decides not to go forward with the killing. This is because Maeve stays his hand. Â
Conrad asks her why, and she doesn’t seem to have a convincing answer. She tells him that it was the wrong place and the wrong time. It could mean that killing Richie could be dangerous when they don’t know what happened with Tommy and whether Eddie was involved or not.Â
Maeve also says that it would be more satisfying if they were present when Richie was killed. However, her actions seem suspicious because she pushed Conrad to kill Archie without much investigation but spared Richie.Â
While Conrad does come off as Maeve’s puppet sometimes, he’s plenty ruthless himself. After all, he ordered Harry to wipe out two rival gangs who dealt with Heroin after they couldn’t stop fighting even after shaking hands. During the meeting with the two gangs, he even finished off one of the leaders.Â
This allowed Conrad to reach out to another group called the Maltese, and they offered 20% more than what they were making before. This makes Conrad come off as business savvy and aggressive.Â
MobLand is streaming on Paramount+. New episodes stream every Sunday. The first season will have 10 episodes.Â
