Plot

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana embarks on a thrilling journey through the treacherous, uncharted waters of Oceania. Accompanied by the demi-god Maui and a new crew of explorers, she faces challenges beyond anything she's ever encountered.

A notable addition to this adventure is Moana's little sister, who resembles her and is expected to play a significant role in the story. According to Disney’s official tagline, the sequel follows Moana as she answers her ancestors' call and navigates dangerous waters for an unprecedented adventure.

While full plot details remain under wraps, it has been revealed that Moana and Maui will confront a new villain with the power to control storms. The sequel, Moana 2, is directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, with production led by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino. The film features an impressive musical lineup, including Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i, and three-time Grammy winner Mark Mancina.

The screenplay is crafted by Jared Bush and Miller, with executive production from Jennifer Lee, Bush, and Johnson. Derrick Jr., who has a rich history with Disney, previously worked as a storyboard artist on projects like The Lion King, Encanto, and Raya and the Last Dragon. He also contributed as a story artist for the original Moana.

Originally conceived as a television series, Moana 2 was transformed into a theatrical release, showcasing new songs by Barlow and Bear. Osnat Shurer produced the film, while Jennifer Lee serves as executive producer. Notably, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who composed songs for the first installment, is not expected to return for this sequel.
