Microsoft is inviting the press for a Surface event on October 2 in New York. Details are still scarce at the moment but we expect the company to announce upgrades to its Surface family of devices — notably the Surface Pro and the Surface Laptop. However, we ask that you keep expectations tempered as there is almost little to no chance of any Surface Phone announcement this time.
The invite reads, "A moment of your time" and doesn't convey anything much. Famed Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet feels that new developments to Microsoft software such as Windows and Office could also be part of the event. While we've not heard much in terms of what sort of hardware refreshes to expect, it is possible that the Surface lineup will get upgraded to the latest Intel 8th generation Core processors that were just announced at IFA 2018. Keep in mind though, these are just incremental hardware refreshes. The actual Surface Pro 6, or whatever it's called, will not be revealed until mid-2019.
Earlier this year, Microsoft was heard talking about 'Modern Life Services' — a new initiative that caters to 'professional consumers' and helps leverage Microsoft's expertise in professional software to aid in consumer-centric services as well. This means some talk about the Xbox One and Windows 10 gaming can also be expected.
Many Windows fans have been clamoring for a Surface Phone for quite some time now. There were many rumors and patent findings related to a dual-screen device codenamed 'Andromeda'. It was later known that Microsoft had put the project on hold considering not too many apps are optimized for dual-screen setups. Still, we could see Microsoft spring up a few surprises in the event.
Microsoft's October 2 event falls right in the middle of Apple's September 12 event and Google's October 9 event. So those on the lookout for upgrading or buying new gadgets will have a lot to look forward to in the coming days.
