Mariner Wealth Advisor formerly Newport Advisory released a security breach notice affecting its systems. The breached information included names however, it could not be stated with certainty that all affected individuals had the same data type revealed.

According to the preliminary investigations, threat actors hacked Mariner Wealth Advisor in December 2024. The wealth advice provider discovered the hacker’s presence on January 12, 2025.

However, by that time the hackers had already copied data from their network. To prevent further data loss and network access, they took the entire Newport Advisory network offline.

The company’s experts are conducting in-depth review of the exposed files and informing the affected individuals.

The exact number of clients whose data is hacked is not known at the moment since the investigations are still underway. Claim Depot stated that the hacking impacted at least three Rhode Island residents among others.

The company assured that the systems used for financial transactions are separate from the breached ones saying, “Please note that financial transactions are executed on entirely separate systems at entirely separate entities that were unaffected by this incident.”

They are working to prevent suspicious financial activities in connection to the Newport Advisory breach. The security notice further stated that researchers are monitoring websites, forums, and other platforms to trace the threat actors and the misuse of the company’s data presumably in fraudulent scams and data leaks.

Based on the status of the investigations so far, they found no evidence of exploitation of the stolen data on other platforms. As the company continues its recovery effort it is also integrating all IT systems into the Mariner network and cybersecurity program as they are now a part of Mariner.
