Disney has finally unveiled the first trailer for its live-action Lilo & Stitch, giving fans a glimpse at how the beloved animated classic has been reimagined. Originally planned for a streaming release, the film has now shifted to a theatrical debut. The 2-minute and 24-second trailer delivers a thrilling mix of action, adventure, heartfelt moments, and nostalgia, staying true to the spirit of the original 2002 movie.

Stitch Lands on Earth – Chaos Begins

The trailer kicks off in deep space, where a high-ranking commander labels Stitch as a "dangerous experiment" who must be captured at all costs. But before he can be contained, Stitch escapes his alien captors and crash-lands on Earth, setting the stage for the chaos to come.

On the Hawaiian island of Kauaʻi, young Lilo (played by newcomer Maia Kealoha) is introduced. The trailer captures her playful and imaginative spirit as she watches a shooting star and makes a heartfelt wish for a “best friend.” Little does she know, her wish is about to come true in the most unexpected way.

“You Sure That’s a Dog?” – Lilo Meets Stitch

The next scene introduces Stitch (voiced by Chris Sanders, reprising his role), who finds himself mistaken for a dog. When Lilo first encounters him, she insists on adopting the “ugly dog” from the shelter. “You sure that’s a dog?” someone asks skeptically. Without hesitation, Lilo agrees, leading to Stitch’s adorably mischievous attempt to fit in by letting out a small “ruff.”

Lilo brings Stitch home, promising to teach him how to be good, but his reckless antics make life difficult for everyone around him. In one moment, he accidentally sets a house on fire, while in another, he’s seen causing chaos on the beach.

As Lilo’s older sister Nani (Sydney Agudong) and others protest against keeping him, Lilo refuses to give up on her new friend. “Sometimes, family isn’t perfect, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t good,” she tells him—a powerful message that captures the film’s core theme.

Ohana Means Family – The Heart of the Story

The concept of ohana (family) remains central in the remake, just as it was in the original animated show. The trailer showcases emotional moments between Lilo and Nani as they struggle to hold their family together under the watchful eye of social worker Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B. Vance).

Meanwhile, Stitch’s destructive tendencies begin to soften as he learns what family truly means. At one point, he admits, “Stitch bad,” showing his realization that he doesn’t quite fit in. But Lilo reassures him that he belongs—a moment sure to tug at fans’ heartstrings.

Alien Chase and High-Stakes Action

The trailer also teases plenty of action as alien agents Jumba (Zach Galifianakis) and Pleakley (Billy Magnussen) are sent to capture Stitch. Explosive chase sequences, futuristic weaponry, and comedic moments between the two bumbling aliens ensure that the sci-fi elements of Lilo & Stitch remain intact.

A Fresh yet Familiar take

Under the direction of Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On), the film maintains the essence of the original while introducing subtle updates. The Hawaiian setting is beautifully recreated, showcasing the culture and traditions that made the animated show so special. Fans will also notice some differences, such as Stitch’s more realistic CGI design, which has sparked discussions among viewers.

Alongside Kealoha and Agudong, the film boasts a talented cast, including Tia Carrere (who voiced Nani in the original film) in a new role, Jason Scott Lee, Amy Hill, Kaipo Dudoit, and Hannah Waddingham.

Final Thoughts – A Promising Remake?

The live-action Lilo & Stitch trailer successfully balances nostalgia with a fresh cinematic approach, delivering humor, heart, and action. With a star-studded cast, stunning visuals, and emotional storytelling, the remake aims to capture both old and new audiences alike. You can watch the official trailer below.
