Ever since its debut in 2020, Jujutsu Kaisen fans have been holding their breaths for a second season. Though a movie almost immediately followed the first season, there seemed to be no news on when anyone could expect another season.
Thankfully, we now have official word on JJK season two's release! The announcement came as a surprise during a celebration event for Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie. Junya Enoki (Yuji's voice in the anime) came on stage to confirm that the second season had begun production and could be expected to air in 2023.
The announcement was followed by celebratory art featuring Yuuta (the protagonist of JJK 0) and official announcements on the franchise's social media.
Though we have no other information available, we're guessing that the upcoming season will be based on The Shibuya Incident. The Shibuya Incident is the longest arc in the JJK manga (58 chapters) and is a key turning point for the characters. It results in heavy casualties and dangerous outcomes for the Jujutsu Sorcerers. Manga fans like to call this is the "devastation arc," and they are right to do so.
But if MAPPA decides to save this arc for later, the second season might be a combination of the 7th arc from the manga (Gojo's Past) and a recap of the JJK 0 movie (like Ufotable did with Demon Slayer). These arcs provide important information and shed light on two of the strongest sorcerers in the JJK universe: Yuuta Okkotsu and Gojo Satoru.
Hopefully, though, it's the former rather than the latter. Because as good as the other arcs are, The Shibuya Incident is a true game-changer.
Since we don't know if season two will recap the JJK 0 movie, it's best to watch it before the season comes out. But if that's not preferred, wait until there's official word on which arcs the second season will cover, and if you don't see the Cursed Child arc, proceed with the movie.
JJK 0 is set to release internationally on March 28 this year, and we're expecting to be able to stream it sooner.
