A new chapter in the John Wick universe is on the way, and this time, it's all about Donnie Yen’s Caine. The blind assassin who stole the spotlight in John Wick: Chapter 4 is getting his own spin-off, with Yen donning multiple hats for production this time. With filming set to begin later this year, here's everything we know so far.
The John Wick universe is expanding once again with a new spinoff film centered on Caine, the blind assassin played by martial arts legend Donnie Yen. The project was officially announced at CinemaCon 2025, confirming that Yen would not only reprise his role but also take on directing duties. Billed as a Hong Kong-style action thriller, the film is set to begin production later this year.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the film will continue Caine’s journey following John Wick: Chapter 4, where he was freed from his obligations to the High Table. The last time fans saw Caine, he had reunited with his estranged daughter in Paris—only to be approached by a vengeful Akira (Rina Sawayama). Whether this thread will be explored in the new movie remains to be seen, but fans can expect plenty of intense action sequences and character-driven storytelling.
Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II, BRZRKR) is set to write the screenplay, building on an earlier draft by Robert Askins. The film is being produced by John Wick franchise veterans Basil Iwanyk & Erica Lee (through their Thunder Road shingle), and Chad Stahelski (through his 87Eleven Entertainment production banner), with Yen also acting as an executive producer.
Chad Stahelski, who has been instrumental in shaping the John Wick universe, expressed his excitement about Yen leading the project, stating, “One of my favorite characters in the John Wick world is Caine. To have the chance to dive into his world and discover all his adventures excites us all. We envision a modern-day kung-fu classic that explores the John Wick world, and who better to helm it than Donnie Yen himself? His understanding of the culture, the world and, of course, the action, make him the perfect director for this project.” (via Deadline)
Iwanyk and Lee said, “There is no one who knows this character better than Donnie, and he knows exactly how to deliver what audiences want and expect from Hong Kong-style action. He’s clearly the best choice to direct and we’re excited to begin production.”
Yen, who has directed films like Sakra and The Prosecutor, is no stranger to bringing action-packed stories to life. Speaking about the opportunity, Yen shared his enthusiasm: “The John Wick films have set an immensely high standard for action filmmaking, and I greatly appreciate Lionsgate giving me the opportunity to further elevate the franchise. I am both thrilled and deeply inspired to make this happen.” (via Deadline)
The Caine spinoff is part of a larger expansion of the John Wick franchise under Stahelski’s deal with Lionsgate. This includes Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, set to hit theaters on Friday, June 6, 2025, and John Wick: Chapter 5, which is currently in development.
With Yen at the helm, fans can expect the upcoming Caine film to bring a fresh take on martial arts action while staying true to the gritty, stylized world of John Wick. Production is expected to begin later this year, and more details will likely emerge in the coming months.
