All iPhone 16 models have an IP68 rating, making them splash, water, and dust resistant. As per the official technical documentation, the latest iPhones can be submerged up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes without water damage.
It’s worth noting that the iPhone 16’s advertised IP68 rating doesn’t make it waterproof in all conditions. Those tests are done in controlled conditions. More precisely, the IP tests are done in water with no movement. So, if you take your iPhone while swimming in a pool, additional water pressure might cause issues with your device.
Also, the IP tests are done in fresh water only. Remember that most pools have additional chemicals like chlorine, while salt water can degrade the metal parts of your iPhone, including your phone’s charging port. That said, it’s best not to take your phone while swimming.
On the plus side, if water gets on your iPhone by accident, feel free to wipe it off. No damage will happen, which means there’s no place for panic, even if water gets to your iPhone’s charging port for a few seconds.
We'll also add that the regular iPhone warranty doesn't cover water damage. However, AppleCare+ comes with unlimited accidental damage protection and is subject to a service fee or deductible.
Here’s what else is new on the iPhone 16 lineup, which includes bigger displays, more durable batteries, a new Camera Control button, and plenty more. Thanks for reading!
